The Most Worst Foods Not to Eat at Night

Good health is not just about eating the right worst foods. It’s about eating the right worst foods in the right proportions at the right time. A heavy meal at night can put a strain on your digestive system and disrupt your sleep. Plus, it may contribute to weight gain because you aren’t likely to burn that many calories while you sleep.

Eating right before you fall asleep is a recipe for disaster. Not only can it lead to weight gain, but it can disrupt your usual sleep patterns and cause acid reflux. If you have to hit the fridge, make sure to avoid alcohol, soda, chocolate, cheese, nuts, citrus and coffee. These worst foods are either high in fat, acidity or loaded with caffeine that will keep you up all night.

Cheese

It's another fatty worst food, but if you must indulge, hard varieties such as Parmesan and Swiss have less of a reflux effect than softer types such as feta and mozzarella. (Yes, that means no pizza.)

Passionfruit

Though not always available in the nearest supermarket, it's worth finding if you're in need of some serious shuteye. Passionfruit contains somniferum, which has sleep-inducing properties. Omar recommends eating the healthy fruit as is, or try it as a juice or tea.

Coffee

It’s not surprising. The coffee beans used to make this beverage contains caffeine. Millions of people rely on coffee to stay awake and keep away the Z’s. In the United States alone, 50% of the population or 150 million Americans drink coffee at an average of 3 cups a day. But since you’re after a good night’s rest, you should avoid drinking coffee in all its forms cold, hot, cappuccino, espresso, latte, or straight up.

Cheesy Foods

Greasy toppings on your pizza are delicious but can leave you lying awake, feeling too full. Cheese is good for your health and even promotes sleep because as it contains the sleep-inducing amino acid tryptophan. However, eating high-fat cheeses, especially at night, can make digestion terribly uncomfortable. Plus, they are loaded with calories. You can have non-fat cottage cheese and low-fat mozzarella or ricotta cheese, but remember moderation is the key.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate, though the healthiest form of chocolate from an antioxidant perspective, can contain relatively high levels of caffeine that can keep you up at night if you're sensitive. It also contains theobromine, a compound that has caffeine-like effects.
